3 Ways to Increase Your Water Pressure

Low water pressure is annoying and even wasteful depending on the type of problem you are having. With us having a wealth of knowledge in the industry, we often say that low water pressure is often an indicator for bigger problems to come. Don’t sleep on this issue and try these tips on your own before calling in your Levine & Sons professionals»

Clean the Aerator
Are you experiencing pressure problems at one faucet, or multiple throughout your home? If it is only one faucet, your problem could be related to a dirty faucet aerator. Your aerator is there to help limit water use and filter the sink water, but sometimes it can clogged with debris and cause spotty pressure problems. To clean your aerator, use the following steps:

  • Unscrew the aerator at the end of the faucet with a pair of pliers.
  • Rinse off dirt and sediment in a bag of vinegar and let it stand for about 15 minutes.
  • Run the faucet WITHOUT the aerator to flush out any sediment or debris that might be in the pipe.
  • Screw it back on and evaluate your pressure.

Address Hot Water Issues
If you’re only experiencing pressure problems when you’re using hot water, it’s likely related to a malfunction within your water heater. The PSI might need to be adjusted or the heater simply isn’t able to heat water fast enough to keep up with demand so water either comes out slowly or colder. This could be due to the age of the unit, or a problem with sediment build up after a long winter. Flushing the tank could work to combat the problem, but more than likely professional help will be needed.

Check for Leaks
A leak in your system is going to greatly impact the pressure that it is putting out. You can start by locating your water main and inspecting it for any dampness or visible cracks. If you don’t see anything here, there’s still a chance that a leak is causing your pressure problems. Low pressure is usually an indicator for much bigger problems.
