Do’s and Don’ts of HVAC Repair

When it comes to HVAC and any kind of home repair really, you want to BELIEVE you can fix it on your own. And we aren’t doubting your skills, but there are some things that are just better left to the professionals. A mixed wire or an improperly repaired unit could be a fire hazard and that is nothing to mess with! Here are some HVAC repairs you CAN do, and some you shouldn’t even consider»

Do’s

  • Purchase a programmable thermostat and set it based on your schedule. This could save you up to 35% on your heating and cooling bill if it is done correctly. All you have to do is set certain temperatures for when you are home, and then let your unit rest while you do– it’s as simple as that.
  • Changing your air filters is another super easy thing you can do all on your own. Every 4-6 months, check your filter and hold it up to the light. If you can no longer see light passing through, it is time to get a new one. Bring it down to the hardware store and ask the attendant to help you locate the SAME filter as the one you removed. Size is important!

Do Not’s

  • Don’t ever trust yourself to install an HVAC unit. While the savings might seem enticing, it is dangerous, ignorant and borderline insane to try and take on this project without prior experience and training. The sizing needs to be perfect, the unit must be level and all of the ducts need to be in line or else you could face some big and dangerous problems.
  • For leaks and anything related to gas, like say a furnace, it is better to be safe than sorry. A levine technician might come in and tell you nothing is wrong, but wouldn’t you rather have the peace of mind? Let us help you and the problems will remain small. If you try to overstep your boundaries, the problems might outgrow your budget.
