In the past few years, the cost to run your Detroit home on electricity has spiked. In fact, it is only more expensive in three other cities to run your electricity, those being New York ($0.188 kWh), San Francisco ($0.231 kWh), and Los Angelos ($0.215 kWh). Detroit comes in at $0.162 kWh.

What is kWh?

A kWH is a kilowatt-hour and is most commonly known as a billing unit for energy delivered to consumers by electric utilities.

For more information on what kWh is, read the wikipedia page.

The formula for kWh is:

kWh = (3600s)(kW) = 3600s(kJ/s) = 3600kJ

A Formula for determining any appliance cost on your home:

  1. Multiply Watts by hours
  2. Divide by 1,000
  3. Multiply the kWh (which is $0.162 in Deteroit) by the price of electricity

Common HVAC appliance Wattage & costs incurred include:

  • Air conditioners: 900-1,500 Watts – $10.50-$21.00 a month
  • Ceiling fan: 80-110 Watts – $1.05 a month
  • Dehumidifier: 300-410 Watts – $21.00 a month

  • Furnace Fan/Boiler Pump: 300-600 – $5.95 a month
  • Portable Room Heater (1 hr/day): 900-1,500 Watts – $3.85 a month
  • Well Pump: 950-1,400 Watts – $4.20 a month
  • Water Heater: 3,500-4,500 Watts – $28.0-$30.00 a month

This of course is all the more reason to become energy efficient when it comes to plumbing and HVAC.
