Heating Questions? We’ve Got Answers

The Michigan winter approaches and the race is on to achieve the most efficient heating for the season. Like most things, education is the key to improvement and we want to educate our readers on some of the heating concerns they may have. Read and Enjoy!

Q: How often do I change my air filters?
A: This is a great question, but unfortunately, there really is no set answer. If you have a removable media filter, which is pretty standard, you should be checking in on it every month or so. If you have pets or a frequently used home, you might want to keep a closer eye.

Q: How do I save on my heating bills?
A: Again, this is not an exact science. You could start by insulating your home to help hold that heat in. If your furnace achieves its desired temperature, it can take a break and save you money! You should also be changing your filters and maintaining your unit with the help of a professional before every heating season.

Q: How long will my furnace last?
A: Typically, we see furnaces last anywhere from 15-20 years. It could be more, it could be less, but that really depends on how you take care of it. If you pay close attention and schedule annual tune-ups, you should get the full life expectancy from your unit.

Q: What might cause a furnace to break down?
A: Like most things, time is usually the biggest factor in decay. But a unit could fail prematurely for a number of reasons. One, the contractor failed to install the unit properly and this caused your furnace to overexert itself. Two, the equipment inside the furnace was cheap and low quality. At Levine & Sons, we recommend you look at high quality, energy efficient units to give you long lasting savings. And the last factor is negligence by the homeowner. You can’t keep sending your furnace out there every season without a little prep work!
