Why Is My Thermostat Blank?

You walk up to your thermostat to adjust the temperature setting and you realize the entire screen is blank. Panic mode, commence. “What could possibly have caused it to stop working and does it mean I need to run out and buy a new one?” Not so fast. Here’s what could be causing the problem:

Drained Batteries: the first, and most common, cause of a blank thermostat screen is dead batteries. Take them out and replace them with brand new ones and that should solve the problem.

If your thermostat doesn’t use batteries, check the wiring…

Electrical Malfunction: some thermostats are hard-wired into your home’s electrical system and others could possibly even be wireless. Check the main break to make sure nothing has tripped – if it has, you’ll likely only need to flip the switch. If nothing has tripped, call in an expert to take a look.

If that doesn’t seem to be the problem, it could be a safety switch issue…

Tripped Safety Switch: some heating and air conditioning systems are equipped with a safety switch that shuts the system down if it detects unsafe conditions. This could be a result of high running temperatures, too much moisture in the system or dirty air filters. Sometimes, they falsely diagnose a situation and the switch simply needs to be reset.
