Sewer Gas Odor?
Do you have a “rotten egg” smell coming from your plumbing system? Although this problem is common, it is extremely unpleasant. Healthy plumbing systems do not release repugnant odors, so if you’ve noticed any sulfuric smells inside or around your home, Levine & Sons is here to help.
Why Sewer Gas Odor Happens
Sewer gas is kept from your home using “traps,” contraptions usually installed below each appliance (sinks, showers, washbasins, etc.). Any appliance connected to your internal plumbing has one. Traps usually look like a U-shaped bend in the pipe that works to hold water. This prevents sewer-borne gases from entering the home.
Sewer gas odors can occur for a number of reasons. They can emerge if there is a problem in your piping system, a trap is malfunctioning, unused, dry or rotting, or if there are cracks in the walls of your piping. It’s important to remember that your piping doesn’t necessarily have to leak for there to be a problem. Any of these problems can allow sewer gas and odor to creep into the home.
Troubleshooting Sewer Odor
The first step is to precisely locate where the odor is coming from. Start by floor, narrow down where the smell is coming from by room, then each appliance, etc. Run the water at each faucet to make sure the trap is full of water. This is primarily a problem in sinks that don’t get used often—the water in the trap can evaporate and let sewer gas inside the home.
If this doesn’t fix the problem, call us. We will perform a “smoke test” to pinpoint exactly where the problem is and remedy it immediately.
To find the problem, we use a machine that produces a non-toxic, environmentally safe, smoke-like material similar to dry ice or a fog machine. We put it where you believe the odor is coming from, pump the “smoke” into your system allowing it to billow out from the problem area. The rest will exit your home harmlessly through a vent in the roof. Once the problem has been identified, we’ll fix it immediately.
