The holiday parties have already begun but your turn to host is right around the corner. There’s food that needs to prepared, cleaning that needs to be done and drains that need to be maintained! Yes, you heard that correctly, your drain needs to be a part of your holiday party checklist. With the number of guests coming to your home, the likelihood of a drain mistake increases dramatically and you need to be aware of the risks. Here are some items that you need to keep out of the drain:
Starches
The problem with starches going down your drain is that they expand and become sticky when wet. If they sit in your drain they’re going to stick together and cause a ball that will lead to a problematic clog. You should keep the following items out of your drain:
- Potatoes
- Pasta
- Bread
Toys & Jewelry
This one is obvious, but you would be surprised at how many calls we get related to these types of clogs. People tend to leave children’s bath toys or jewelry on top of their toilet and when they fall in, it’s difficult to remove with just a plunger. At this year’s holiday party, make sure you leave out a dish on your sink for your guests to leave their rings and bracelets while they wash their hands.
Grease
Grease tends to expand and harden over time, making it the absolute worst thing to put down your drain. If you’re making a Christmas ham, take the grease and pour it into an aluminum can and let it harden before trashing it.
Liquid Cleaners
If you notice a slow draining shower or toilet before the party, the natural inclination is to pour some liquid cleaner down the drain for a quick fix. This is fine, but if you rely on it too frequently, you could cause larger problems for yourself. The same chemicals that eat away at the clog can eat away at your pipes if they are exposed to it too often.
