The Importance of Insulation

If you’re like most homeowners in the Metro Detroit area, you know that heating and cooling takes up most of your utility costs. When you break it down, heating and cooling usually accounts for just under half of your annual utilities costs. That is a pretty significant number, and it would be smart to try and get the most out of these systems. The best way to do that is a little thing called insulation and we are going to tell you what you need to know!

insulation- heating and cooling

Why is it so important?
A lot of people only associate insulation with the cold weather months. While this might be important, insulation is actually required all year round if you want to get the most bang for your buck. It protects your home from cold and warm weather drafts and it also locks in the air that your heating and cooling system produces. Without proper insulation, your home will lose over 30% of the warm air your produce during this winter.

Where do I need it?
This is a difficult question to answer because it all really depends on your home. You want to add insulation to any area where the outdoor air meets the inside air. For example, exterior walls, basements, crawl spaces, attics etc. The attic is an especially important place to insulate in the winter because when the hot air rises, it needs to be trapped or else it will vanish into thin air.

What kind do I need?
For a cold to moderate climate like Michigan, you’re going to need a higher R-value. The R-value is the system for sorting insulation by thickness. So the higher the value, the thicker the cut. If you live in Southfield or the surrounding areas, go with an R-19 to start, and if you feel that you need more you should bump it up to R-30. Now you know everything you need to know so get to it!
