DIY Furnace Tune-Up Tips

Your furnace has been helping you through the winter and it is time to return the favor. As temperatures drop and snowfall accumulates, the furnace needs to work harder to produce heat and this can cause problems. To stay ahead of costly repairs, you should perform seasonal maintenance on your unit in the coming weeks. Here are some tips to help»

DIY Repair- Furnace Tune-Up

Tip #1: Make Sure the Power is OFF
This might seem silly and self-explanatory, but it is far too important to leave out. Before you do any maintenance on a gas or electrical furnace, you need to make sure it is off!

Tip #2: Vacuum the Burners
Use your skinny vacuum attachment to get to the back of the burners and around the furnace base. If you let dust build up in these areas, they can get lodged in the pilot and cause much costlier problems. You’ll need a screwdriver to remove the faceplate, but make sure you keep track of the screws because they can be rather small.

Tip #3: Remove and Clean Blower
You will need a screwdriver to remove the control panel that lays in front of the blower. Once this is removed, take a socket and ratchet to remove the bolts that are holding in the blower. With your vacuum and a small brush, try and clear dust or any small debris you can find. But be careful not to throw anything off with deep cleaning.

Tip #4: Replace the Filter
We hope you took our advice and did this earlier in the season, but now isn’t a bad time to check in on your filters. A dirty filter can cause your unit to work up to 30% harder, and that excess use of energy can cost you big. Check on the filter and if it seems to be dusty, take it to the local hardware store and replace it with the same sized filter.
