Why Is My Water Coming Out Dirty?

After coming inside from working on an HVAC system, the last thing our technicians want to see is dirty water coming from the faucet! It’s concerning and given the events in Flint, these issues should not be passed to the side. If you notice foul water coming from your faucet, call your Levine & Sons professionals immediately:

Hot Water Heater

It is fairly easy for anyone to tell if their hot water heater is the cause of polluted water. If your hot water is coming out brown or tinted, that could mean it is coming from your water heater? Does it happen when you are running cold water too? This could be related to sediment build up on the bottom of your water heater from years and years of use. Draining your tank could be the solution!

Old Corroding Pipes

If you have a faucet or drain valve near where the water comes into your house, check water there first. If it is dirty there as well, it is probably an issue with the utility source and you need to call the water department. If this water is coming out clean, the dirtying is happening because of corrosion somewhere in your plumbing system.

Water Softener Malfunction

If you have a water softener, it is likely because you wanted to keep your dishes clean, but that doesn’t come at the expense of dirty water! These softeners all come equipped with a backflush cycle valve and if that isn’t working, the dirty, filtered water will get flushed into your system rather than the sewer. This is a relatively cheap and simple fixed compared to the other possibilities on this list.

Public Water Issues

Much like the situation in Flint, Michigan several years ago, there is a possibility that dirty water is coming directly from the source. You can never be too careful when it comes to water and if you see, taste or smell something out of place, be sure to say something! This is water that you and all of our neighbors to drink!

If you think you may need backflow testing, it is time for your yearly checkup, or you need a backflow device installed, Levine & Sons is the right company for the job.
