The Christmas lists are being filled out as we speak and the holiday budget needs to fit in all of the toys on the list. You can’t expect a major pay raise, so it is up to you to cut down in other areas tofatten the wallet a little more in the month of December. One of the areas you can cut back on is plumbing and heating, and we can help!
Tip #1: Replace Worn Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping around windows and doors is extremely important if you want to achieve maximum efficiency. When you pay to keep your furnace running, you want all that heat to stay locked in which is impossible if you have chinks in your Armour. Take a walk around your home and inspect windows, doors and electrical outlets to see if any new caulk or weatherstripping needs to be applied.
Tip #2: Check Your Insulation
Proper insulation can reduce your home heating costs by 15-20% which sounds nice considering all of the things on your christmas list cost money. Take some R-15 insulation up to the attic and fortify your walls to make sure the cold air stays out, and the warm air stays in.
Tip #3: Turn Off Faucets While They’re Out Of Use
If every person in your four person home turned off the faucet while they brushed their teeth, you could save thousands of gallons of water per year. While the cost might be small, wastefulness adds up and this is a very easy mistake to avoid. A little tip– put a sign out next to the sink to remind all of the members of your family to turn that knob!
Tip #4: Only Do Full Loads of Laundry
Every washing machine has a maximum capacity and you should know exactly what that amount is if it is savings you seek. Doing half loads uses almost the same amount of water, so every five loads you do, you’re wasting dozens of gallons. Try and limit your laundry and remember that it is okay to wear a pair of jeans more than once!
