In Southeast Michigan, we experience all four seasons and insulation can help us get through all of them. The investments you made into your heating/cooling systems are only as good as the insulation that protects them. It’s like Bonnie and Clyde, they really only function as a team and it is your job to keep them together. A well insulated home is going to have lower utility costs and it will require less energy to reach a desired temperature. Doesn’t that sound great? Let’s take a look at some common insulation questions and their answers.
Where do I need it?
Insulation belongs in any crevasse that separates cool air from warm air. Air typically wants to find equilibrium, so it moves from where it is warm to where it is cold. In the summer that means you have to keep air out, and in the winter you have to seal it in.
What do I need?
Insulation is measured in R-values. The higher the value, the thicker the insulation and the tighter the seal. But in certain climates this is unnecessary because the indoor and outdoor temperatures are not that different. But during a Michigan winter or summer, we know that our homes tend to be a lot warmer/colder than the outside air. The recommended R-value for our climate is anything over R-19.
What else can I do to seal my home?
Now that you have dealt with the insulation, it is time to talk about air sealing your home. Not all doors and windows fit inside their frame and this leaves tiny cracks for air to escape out of. Do a once over of all the windows and doors that lead to the outside air. Then, go to the hardware store, pick up some caulk and go to work. Once you seal up these areas, you should be able to see and feel the difference.
