How To Prevent Basement Flooding

Basement flooding can be caused by multiple factors but regardless, the clean up is never fun. The key to avoiding these disasters is to stay ahead of them and listen to the warning signs. Here are a few things you can do to stay ahead of the game and soak up the mess before it even happens.

Well Covers
If you have a below ground basement, well covers are the only thing that can protect you from the runoff. To be safe, you should also check to see that your gutter downspouts are draining water away from this area. Most renovated basements require a well for fire safety, so now it is your job to keep the water out!

Generators
If you own a sump pump, it is going to need electricity to work it’s magic. In the event of a bad storm, the electricity might not be available so a generator is the only thing that can help stop the flood. Make sure your generator has enough power to at least run the necessities in your home for 5-7 days.

Plumbing Inspection
Some floods are not weather related at all. In fact, the majority of floods are caused by plumbing malfunctions that could have easily been avoided. Frozen, clogged or cracked pipes can cause pressure build ups throughout a plumbing system that will lead to floods in multiple areas of your home. Stay on top of your plumbing and don’t hesitate to call Levine & Sons if you notice something fishy. It could prevent your basement from turning into a fish tank.

Sewer Inspection
Your main sewer line can’t afford any traffic build ups or else it might overflow. Sometimes baby wipes, organic matter, toys and other items can find themselves lodged in your main sewer line without warning. All of your fixtures will start to drain slower and before you know it, they’ll begin spilling over. On occasion, it might be a good idea to have the Levine & Sons team come in and do a video camera inspection of your main sewer line.

At Levine & Sons, we want to keep your home comfortable all year round. A flood kind of takes us off the path so we want to help you avoid these problems all together. If you would like help determining the current condition of your pipes and sewer line, we are the right team for the job.
